"The human whose name is written in this notebook shall die." A tasteless joke, wouldn't you say? It was also the first thought of young genius Yagami Raito when he found the Death Note. But the temptation that drove him to test it proved the truth to be different. It belonged to the shinigami Ryuk, a real God of Death, and it was now his to hold as its finder until its pages were full or his life came to an end. Using the Note's power over life and death, the young man proceeded to punish criminals all over the world, and came to be known as 'Kira'. Some were afraid of him, some opposed him, and some worshipped him. His desire was to create a new world, with better people, one that he would rule as God. And for a while, that plan went smoothly, until the secret services and the police were finally aware that the numerous heart attacks could be no simple coincidence. To catch what they saw as no more than another criminal, they called out to the world's greatest detective, known as 'L'. Able to match Raito's own great intellect, L used his amazing power of deduction to draw closer to Kira, forcing the young man to watch his back more carefully. In only a short while, the fate of the world was reduced to a single battle between possibly its two best minds.

The year is 2004, and Yagami Raito has entered university, finally meeting the great detective L who had hid his face from the world for so long. Sakura TV has started airing videos from a Kira imposter, and L has allowed Raito to join the task force. The second Kira has asked to meet the first, and when Raito goes to Aoyama on behalf of the task force, it is revealed to the second Kira who the first really is. A message is sent to the Sakura TV station stating that the two have met, and two days later L recieves the message. On the same day, Misa Amane shows up at Raito's home, introducing herself as the second Kira and pledging herself to him.
