Actually I'm a little tickled no one else has asked this yet. :3
It's a basic question. O:
So who is it? Any particular reason why?
I'm not sure who my favourite is... Mikami, probably.
..Though I'm quite fond of BB, but, technically he's not a Death Note character, due to his dying before the series. buuu...
Regardless of what the anyone else says, I will pronounce "Mikami"

Aww, you beat me to it. I was about to do something like this! XD
I really had a hard time picking between L Lawliet and Mello, but in the end, Mello triumphed. I guess I have a soft spot for the underdog or just anyone with a gun actually. Something about his desperation to beat Near tugs at my interest, and I love how reckless he can be as compared to the other, more restrained, characters in Death Note.
What I do hate about being a Mello fan though is that his death scene kinda sucked. Before I found out the truth behind his death, I just kinda sat there, manga in hand, and was like "That's it?!". That, and there is NO Mello merchandise. (I'm addicted to keychains and t-shirts. I don't know why.)
But it still is a close call. Ratio and Ryuk do rank up there, and Naomi Misora is ridiculously fun to draw (No, really. She is.)
I'm rambling now. XD *Votes for Mello*

it was a hard choice, but i voted Mikami too!
before i got on this site and during my tv time, Mikami was the one who stood out the most and had the most potential to be something great. but his morals had gotten so twisted that kira only made it worse. I guess how motivated his was to do good just touched me ^^ * why i got so excited when we got a mikami*
and the mello thing did kinda suck....you expect him to die a bit more nobly than that, but i guess thats the consequences... his death made me sad...
then it would be L near matt and...light....misa is cute, takada annoys me, then its just blank

I was about to vote L, but my friend has him locked up in a closet, so I chose Near because the fluffiness is available to me without threat of murder.

Mello all the way, for some of the reasons stated above...
They always talked like having emotions was a bad thing, when it was Mello's risky action that ultimately led to the defeat of Kira...
Also, I find Mello kind of the in-between Light and L, in terms of "badness."
I also found it interested how Mello's dress is kind of reminiscent of Ryuk...

waa, I hated Mello's death. It sucked a lot, even Matt's was better (Hardly see him in the anime, as I watched that and not read) lol.
Satsuji, you wouldn't be playing Raito if you didn't like him!

*votes* I voted for L Lawliet! ^_^ He is my favorite character because he is so quirky and strange. I dig that. Plus, I too am a massive sugar-holic! He is totally adorable to me and I just wanna cuddle him forever! His intelligence in the series always amazed me. He always seemed to be one step ahead. Except for that one time...*cries* And yes, I did cry during his scene of loss. I get attached to characters. So sue me.  |

Don't worry jax, I cried during a lot of the deaths. I laughed at takada's and pretty silent during lights, but I cried for mello matt and l's

My top favorite is...L, actually. XD' Surprise. Honestly, I have a lot in common with him...I can get behind him better than anyone else in the series. I don't have a fangirl crush like a lot of gals do...I see him as more cuddly. XD' But he is and always will be my favorite.
A close second is Mello - I like the fact that he gets emotional. He's rather...human. And awesome. I can't really explain it, I just really like him - I relate to him, also, I suppose.
Third is...Mikami. Because obviously he needed to be here, right? XDDDD While I don't side with Kira, I find his character fascinating - a man of faith. That's why I chose to play him...even if I don't agree, I can get inside his head, and I can pull out those convictions. He's not my top favorite character - but he HAS become my favorite character to write. There's a lot that remains unspoken with him, and I like that. ^^
...I also really liked BB. ^^

Personally, It's a bit of a tiff between L and Raito XD...
I like L, because he's so damn smart...and Raito well...Raito's cute and rather...sneaky, much like my neko-chan..so it's kind of a fight between the two XP...

Such a difficult decision to make!!! I adore Raito and L and Misa, and their whole dynamic. Such awesome characters! And Aizawa - he didn't play a big part in the series, but his character was extremely likeable and a pretty good foil to L with the whole DN family/career deal.
... but in the end, the absolutely adorable Matsuda Touta triumphed. I've always been a sucker for the comic relief.
