For the past while as the other kids played outside, Kage was in the confines of the playroom, lost in recessive thought as she looked down at the chessboard.
This wasn't just a chessboard, and everyone knew that in whammy's house. The board itself was a delicate sheet of glass mounted on a wooden storage space. Each piece hand blown with red and white glass swirls that just seemed hypnotic, and the wood was lined and embroidered with a gold tint that damn near broke your heart. It was a chessboard of unmatched beauty and creativity that could only be made rarely. But it wasn't what made it so special, no...it was more than a chessboard, it was memories
Every day, from the time they met to their kidnapping, Kagumi and Megumi sat there and played chess...nonstop until Kage had memorized the moves play by play. She would never win though, Kage almost never won at chess, especially against Megumi. She was a chess fiend, sometimes Kage was eliminated in three moves, maybe more...but it motivated her, frustrated the hell out of her, but got her moving. She always lost her temper when she played chess, she didn't have the patience.
The accumulation of these facts is ultimately what made the kids leave her alone while she stared at the red king, spellbound and blank, as if in a trance. No one sat down to play with her, no one bothered or cared, and this was perfectly fine with the tired teenager.
