Asuka’s eyes opened slowly; her vision was blurred. She slowly glanced over at the digital clock on the counter next to her—6:43 AM. Eyes adjusted, she looked over at Sasuke whose eyes seemed fixed on the ceiling. She asked him how long he had been awake.
“I never really sleep for more than five consecutive hours these days,” Sasuke answered.
Asuka informed him that she had to leave. She had a class at 9:20 AM, and her school was an hour and a half away from To-Oh. She asked him if he wanted her to bring him his shirt while she was up; he nodded.
Fifteen minutes later, Asuka was fully clothed and gathering her things from the floor of Sasuke’s room. Sasuke was wearing only jeans and sitting on the edge of the bed with his eyes closed, head down, hands folded, and a blunt in his mouth. His dreads weren’t tied back in a ponytail like they normally would be, so his dreads just hung down long enough to completely cover his face. Asuka grabbed the last of her belongings, moved Sasuke’s hair out of the way for a second, kissed him on the cheek, and left. Sasuke just sat there staring at the floor.
Sasuke looked at the door as though he was hoping someone new would knock and step into his life—someone who could fill the void. But as usual, nothing happened; there was nothing to ease this mysterious pain. He picked up the tank shirt Asuka had laid next to him off of the bed and put it on. His thoughts were still focused on Kira as usual. He looked over at the clock—7:02 AM.
He got up and walked to the mirror. He stared at himself for a second and then, blew smoke at his reflection. He turned around and grabbed a purple collared shirt from the closet. He didn’t even bother to button it; he walked to the counter and grabbed his laptop. Then, he took one last puff and threw the blunt away as he opened the door and exited the room.
As he walked through the halls of the Mishima building, he carried his laptop. He walked all the way out of his building and into the same café he always visited. He sat down at a small round table and opened up his laptop. The WiFi symbol was on in the top right of the screen. From there, he used a piece of software his friend had created to establish a connection to the Internet through his Gateway supercomputer, which was housed in the Toshiba Financial building in Tokyo. The large amount of ownership of the Toshiba Conglomerate he inherited from his father gave him plenty of liberties, such as, dedicating one floor of their main office building to housing a supercomputer for his own amusement.
Sasuke hacked into the administrative system of an ordinary sales company bouncing the modem’s call through a search engine site to which he had easy, administrative access, a few other administrative systems for random sales companies, and To-Oh’s academic database. Sasuke bypassed a monitor security and broke a password. This was the third time in six days that Sasuke hacked into this particular system. He was playing mind games with the company’s computer technicians.
The sales company had a team of seven technicians. Only one was good enough to notice that there was even an intrusion. That analyst took the bait as usual and began trying to trace the call back to Sasuke. The other analysts handled various things, and for once, the observant analyst didn’t bother to inform them of Sasuke’s intrusion. The analyst knew that this was a challenge directly from the elusive hacker. The analyst also knew that the other technicians would just run the trace program, which would be the ‘noisiest’ way to trace the hacker. This analyst wanted to trace the call manually so that Sasuke wouldn’t realize he was being traced. This would take much longer, and it would be very difficult.
Unfortunately for the analyst, Sasuke was looking for this. Considering how many call bounces Sasuke had used, this trace would have taken hours. Sasuke disconnected long before the analyst made any real progress. Then, Sasuke covered his tracks by deleting the logs on three different systems that had been used to bounce the original call.
Sasuke used hacking as a way to exercise his mind. He enjoyed playing mind games with the analyst from the software company. Sasuke would hack in, do nothing, and disconnect. Suddenly, a voice that sounded like his spoke to him and told him to use this cerebral exercise to fill the void. He felt it pressed upon him to begin his own Kira investigation.
Sasuke looked at the top right of the screen to see the clock—7:44 AM. Sasuke smiled a full smile for the first time in weeks. He was happy that he had finally realized what he needed to do to ease the pain. He hacked into Sakura TV’s central mainframe. It was the most difficult hacking job he had ever attempted. His infiltration methods were the same; this time, however, he had to bypass a proxy server and a firewall in addition to the monitor.
He opened the file server and began browsing for useful files. Just as Sasuke had expected, all the videos of Kira’s broadcasts, the second Kira’s broadcasts, and L’s broadcasts were cataloged, each in its very own file. There were even some files of videos that were never broadcast. This puzzled Sasuke. He thought, Why would they have deliberately withheld certain broadcasts? Is it possible that Sakura TV staged all of this crap? No, those broadcasts were definitely legitimate. Kira, the second Kira, and L wouldn’t have played their parts just because Sakura TV wanted them to do so. And the second Kira was definitely less discriminate than the original when he first came into play. Then, that changed when the second Kira said he had come into contact with the original, which made perfect sense.
Sasuke began copying all of the files related to the Kira investigation into the memory banks of the supercomputer at Toshiba headquarters. The files were coming slowly because they were so large, but there was certainly enough space for them. That supercomputer, the OmeTrin, was a supercomputer that easily doubled as a file server. It had 256 gigaquads of storage space. The combined total amount of space that these large files would consume was only 90 gigaquads.

The files finished copying, and Sasuke exited the file server. Next, Sasuke proceeded to erase the logs and disconnect. The guy at the counter was puzzled when Sasuke suddenly began to laugh hysterically. Then, Sasuke disconnected from the supercomputer, closed up his laptop, and left the café as an evil smile crept across his face.
As Sasuke walked across campus headed back to his dorm, the sun hit the left side of his face just perfectly. He couldn’t help but chuckle at himself while the evil smirk remained on his face—one side of his face appearing bright in the golden, morning sunlight while the opposite side appeared dark in the shadow of its other half. He reached his dorm and unlocked the door. He entered, put his laptop on the counter, and looked at the clock—8:22 AM.
“I never really sleep for more than five consecutive hours these days,” Sasuke answered.
