Ryuk languidly hovered near the entrance to the mall, waiting for Raito to return. People passed by, children threw tantrums, parents admonished them, and stubborn activists handed out flyers to the uninterested and jaded populace.
“So this is why Raito wants to cleanse the world. Humans really are like animals sometimes, but they're interesting, and even with others helping him, he can't change human nature. He'd better hurry up though, or I'll have to start a cleansing of my own.”
Holding back the impulse to cause mischief, he remained near the edge of the the door, observing and inwardly laughing at the names of the vulnerable passerby. With each minute further into the hour, he became more steadfast in his vigil. His sleepless eyes became glazed with boredom, but he was managing with the task, and hoped it would soon be rewarded, hopefully with apples. Juicy, delicious apples.
As his mind drifted, his focus wavered and allowed bits of conversation to invade. Mothers recited shopping lists, none of which mentioned apples, and thus of were of no interest. Cashiers chatted about the weather, most with caustic voices, the result of a long day and little rest. Others spoke of trivial matters, which to a god of death, meant everything.
“These people are so boring when they're left alone, but if I start anything, Raito won't be able to make it interesting on his own. It wouldn't hurt to kill just one though. That boy over there wouldn't be missed, he's all alone, or that lady in the middle of the group, she seems like their leader. Getting rid of her would cause a little chaos. Even if it spread, it'd still be so little, yet so fun. I think comparing these pathetic things to animals is almost an insult, they're more like insects. Hyuk, hyuk, yes. Insects, and I have big feet to stomp on them with.”
At that, Ryuk caught the voice of the lone boy, who held a weathered book in his hands.
“As flies to wanton boys, are we to the gods; they kill us for their sport.”Ryuk peered closer and read the title of the book. King Lear, a play by Shakespeare. Now here was a human with a mind! He knew they were fated to be killed, that they were the play-things of the gods. Shakespeare would most definitely be interesting.
Ryuk waited until the boy closed the book with a satisfied yawn and stuffed in away in a backpack.
“Good, it's away,”Ryuk thought. “He won't notice if anything happens.”
Ryuk extended an arm outwards, reaching for the book, and with a deft twist of his long fingers, he snatched it, tucking it away hurriedly before anyone saw it floating in the air.
“Hyuk, hyuk, I'll have to remember his name, he might want this back later! For now though, I should head back to where Raito said to wait, he may be there by now.
Returning speedily to his former spot, Ryuk ducked into the shadows and extracted the book. Opening it to a creased page, he read aloud, though only he could hear it.
““I will do such things, what they are, yet I know not: but they shall be the terrors of the earth.”Ryuk laughed wickedly, and in mocking tones made his reply.”King Lear, you're unsure, but I know what the terror of the earth is. It's humans like you who think they're in control! Fun to watch, but I'm not the one suffering. You're the terror, and I'm the one to end you and begin another.”Ryuk's maniacal glare tore through the names of those surrounding him and in his fervor, he touched a hand to his Deathnote. So much fun to be had, yet it would have to wait, there were greater things awaiting.
His amusement growing, he opened to another page. “It is the stars, the stars above us, govern our conditions.” Once more Ryuk laughed, this time maliciously, as the temptation to end his boredom early grew. “The stars are nothing. They die. I don't, which is fortunate because humans seem to multiply faster than I can keep track of. There are so many to kill! So many to watch, and to play with. That's why it's okay to wait, I have eternity, and there are always more people around.”
Calming himself, Ryuk regained his sombre composure. It was rare that he had such an outburst, like the withdrawal he experienced from a lack of apples, when he felt restricted and bored, he had in the past found a private place and allowed himself a hint of insanity. It was his right as an immortal being. After all, not even a god was to be expected capable of dealing with everything and remaining perfectly static. The preachers protesting Kira's work had convinced Ryuk of that point quite handily. Apparently most religions worshiped a wrathful yet loving god. Ryuk was able to relate to neither, for neither was more directed towards enjoyment than the other.
Collected now, he pulled a pen out and wrote the name of the boy in the cover.
“Someone will give this back to him, people may be like insects, but they're still loyal to each other on occasion.”
Placing the book on a nearby bench, he resumed his lookout for Raito. Once more, his eyes became glazed, this time with anticipation though rather than boredom. He was itching to start something, and the mall was a place crowded enough to do it.
