Beep. Beep. Beep.
The sounds of the monitors filled the air in the hospital room, drifting in and around the sterile environment in their steady rhythm.
Mikami Teru was lying motionless in his bed, relaxed and peaceful for the moment - a far cry from how he had been just before being loaded into the transport.
When his shirt was finally removed, the cut had been revealed for how deep it really was...quite deep, but nothing vital had been severed. The ride back had been simple at first - but as they had started to bring him in, he had woken up screaming, writhing in some sort of panic.
Now he was not only lying in the hospital bed, but he had been medicated and strapped down - just in case when he woke he began to panic again. The medication was wearing off now, a strong painkiller and an IV working their way through his system instead.
Fortunately, he would be fine - though the doctors had expressed some whispered concerns over some things in his health records. Something about his blood pressure, and...something else. Something that made them tighten the restraints a bit more when they'd heard details of how he'd laughed and screamed back in the alley.
Of course, they couldn't share any of that with a non-relative...so they had kept the concerns amongst themselves in whispers and meaningful looks.
Now the doctors were all gone, though, and Mikami had been sleeping for an entire night.
A chink of light made its way to his face, and he groaned softly, stirring a bit against the restraints, but unable to move very much.
"Mmnh...."

It had been absolute hell from the minute she got into the ambulance with Mikami who had spent the entire time, the minute he went to sleep, everything was at an uneasy calm that shook her a little. He had been subdued a little after the scare in the alley, but the minute they pulled him out he was screaming and writhing, scaring her just as much as he probably was. But despite all of this, she bit through her fears and stood by. She had seen her best friends killer in him for a second, she saw his insanity and it scared her to an extend she hadn’t gone through since she sat next to him personally. She was relieved to hear that he was going to live through it.
But maybe what she saw was what the doctors saw too, because the entire way the doctors flashed looks of concern to one another. They asked her only small questions, what happened, why did he do that, how long he knew her. It surprised them that she in truth knew Teru Mikami for a matter of days, and when Kagumi got a bit defensive about his sanity, they merely said nothing to her the rest of the way.
She had sat there the entire time in the waiting room while they operated, her head in her hands. She ate chocolate for an hour, and all the way the people looked at the girl oddly, but she didn’t blame them. Her pants were caked with blood and dirt, her hair was now wild and made a curtain on her face. And her bloody t-shirt was in her hands, revealing a black sports bra and a stomach covered with long careful cuts. A mother in the corner had to leave with her son, for all they knew the 15 year old girl nervously pacing was a madwoman
The doctors were very kind to her and her current situation, they sympathized. So instead of forcing to go back home and change her back into her normal clothes, they let her take a shower and gave her a frumpy doctors outfit which was a mint green, she had to tie a tight knot to make sure she fit the pants, and the shirt went down to her knees,; everything was oversized and large, the only things she had her size were the fuzzy slippers.
She was not very happy to come in and see Mikami in restraints, she knew in her heart when the blood would be restored, he would be okay. She had begun to worry a couple of times when he struggled, but she knew he would be all right. In a brave act of will despite the doctors constant warning her, she crawled into bed next to the wonderful person who saved her, wrapping her arms loosely around his neck and leaning in close, maybe if he felt her body heat, or at least felt her heartbeat, he would wake up faster. The doctors tried everything to coax her off, calling him a danger and unpredictable, but she didn’t budge. After hours of this, the doctors gave up and allowed it, telling the nurses to care for him through her ( though she made sure she was on the side opposite the injury.) All the time they offered her food and blankets, but eventually the young girl had drifted off to sleep, waking up occasionally at the first sign of movement or voice from Mikami.
So when she finally heard stirring, a part of her told herself just to go back to sleep, that it was just another struggle. But she lifted her head, amass of black hair moving like a veil around her head. And the sight of seeing him awake made the girl smile sleepily, she still was not fully awake.
“ morning sunshine…”

Another soft groan escaped him as she coaxed him further awake, bleary brown eyes opening to the world around him. For a moment, he was quiet and still, trying to get his bearings....
Then he noticed Kagumi curled up in the bed next to him, and his face furrowed into confusion. "...Miss Kagumi....?" Mikami's voice was soft and a little bit hoarse, laced with questions unspoken. Instinctively, he tried to move - and his sleepy brown eyes shot completely open when he realized that he couldn't.
"...Wha - why am I-?" His jerked his arms, wincing a little bit as the restraints held him in place. "Why am I tied down!?" Another jerk, met with another wince.
Something in his tone was precarious and shaky - frightened. For a moment, his eyes searched the room for something before settling back on Kagumi. It was clear something was wrong - he wasn't smiling at all, but there was panic setting in.

when he woke up, he seemed plenty confused. but she couldnt blame him, he woke up from a good nights sleep and the hell he went through last night to realize he was strapped to a bed. Very frightening indeed if you cant recall a few hours of time. but now that he was waking up, so was she. and that meant maybe she could react a bit better to anything he could dish out while he was in this state.
she let out a sudden squeak of fear when he tried to jerk his arms, under the realization that he couldnt exactly move anywhere. she continued to hold on, looking at him with concern. she couldnt let herself give up on him that easily. but now she felt him revert back just as quickly as she did, looking around the room in fear. she shushed him, hoping the doctors didnt hear him freak out, maybe she could calm him before things got too serious
" calm down Mikami, you arent in any danger," she said panting a little bt trying to slow down her heartbeat so that way when it quickened there was no difference. and maybe the sound of a heartbeat wold calm him, " they didnt tell me why, but they said they put you in these so you cant hurt yourself while they get you better, they arent trying to hurt you."

"What!?"
Mikami's breathing went fast and shallow for a moment, eyes flicking this way and that. He was still looking for something, and occasionally he would jerk at the restraints. What was he doing?
There are no clocks in here - THERE ARE NO CLOCKS IN HERE - oh, God, I have no idea how long I've been out...what happened? What did I do? Why am I restrained? Why - OH, GOD, THERE ARE NO CLOCKS IN HERE-!
Another jerk at the restraints - in particular the arm where his watch normally was, which was - fortunately - the one that was undamaged...also the one nearest to Kagumi. His fingers tensed up, clutching at his bedsheets. Lucky for the young woman, it was clear he wasn't delusional right now...just scared. Mikami was definitely there, not the cackling creature from the alley.
He spoke again, his tone very shaky, eyes still darting everywhere. "...How...how long have I been out...?"

this was only making him feel much worse than she had expected from him. But she noticed him look around for something. she thought about the room as she put a hand on his chest. what is he looking for? she saw the room clearly in her mind and analyzed the room. she had remembered when she walked in how empty it felt, but she couldnt remember what it was that she asked herself.
she squirmed a little at the feel of him struggling at the restraints, but her mind was floating. Trying to figure out what it was she had thought, maybe it was what he was looking for with such fear in his eyes...
and then he finally asked.
her eyes snapped open and she felt like an idiot for not realizing it, of course....no clocks she had asked the doctor before she laid down why there were no clocks in the room, he had no idea or didnt want to tell her. so he got her a small sports watch since he knew she would stay for this. " oh hold on," she slipped her hand away from his neck and turned her palm back, checking the time on the back of her wrist, " its 730 now..." she contemplated, " you were out for a good while, about 20 hours, you slept like a baby."

At first, he had continued to panic, barely able to hold still. His eyes flicked this way and that, his breathing shallow, heart racing in a panic -
Until he saw Kagumi checking a watch, and heard her give him a time. This seemed to satiate his need, and he began to calm down again, the struggling coming to a stop and his expression turning more...embarrassed.
"...All right...." Mikami cleared his throat, trying to get it to stop shaking. It was still hoarse, and his throat felt dry...but at least he seemed to be himself again. "...I'm sorry...you had to see that. I didn't mean to make such a scene...."
As it was, he was trying to remember what had happened before he passed out. Everything was sort of fuzzy after he was stabbed...all he really remembered was pain, and snippets of Kagumi's voice. Sighing, he went back to this moment, and he turned his gaze towards the ceiling, a little color risen to his cheeks.
Dammit...I don't want people to see me like that. It makes me look weak. God, forgive me for that...forgive me my weakness.
He wanted to ask what had happened, but couldn't find the words just yet, a little too lost in his shame.

she looked relieved when her friend finally started to calm down and loose all fear, she only replied to it with a warm smile, she had heard about something like this before, but she wasnt entirely sure he had it. or am i just setting myself up so that i dont see any of it? she was ready to fight with herself a little bit, if mikami wasnt in the room of course, she had her doubts but those can change rather quickly.
she giggled a bit that he had gotten a bit flustered about his actions, " Dont worry about it sir prosecutor," she just gave him a quick thankful peck on the cheek and then buried her head in his chest, " i'm just so glad you are okay."
she had noticed he was getting flustered, and it didnt surprise her one bit. he was supposed to be th strong one, the one with all of the conviction and the strength enough for the two of them, but she had to be strong for him when the blood loss began to take affect on him, she had tomuster up everything she could so that she didnt run away and abandon him, she felt a bit enbarassed for that, but proud that she did it. she couldnt do it before but now she had done it, it was the best feeling she ever had.

Mikami went a little bit redder when she kissed him on the cheek, resting her head on his chest. This was...weird for him, and he wasn't really expecting it. He had always been an only child, and he had very little experience with teenage girls - in fact, he avoided them when he could, as they made cases complicated.
Still, it was better than bleeding in an alleyway.
He felt like the appropriate response would have been to wrap an arm around her, but he was tied down - so that awkwardness was evaded. Lucky me.
Finally, he spoke again, his voice calm and level, like it normally was. "...You're doing all right, yes? I hope I didn't frighten you too badly, but I wasn't about to let you get stabbed back there...."
Protective, with no shame. That was what Mikami was - a protector. More than anything else, he wanted to stop the wicked. That was why he agreed with his God as much as he did. Even so, his brows furrowed a bit, and he looked towards Kagumi, his frown hinting at the questions he couldn't ask.
"...I don't remember much about what happened...I must have gone into shock. Everything is sort of a blur...."
He didn't remember laughing, nor did he remember why he had. Even the stabbing with the pen was sort of faded - bits and pieces he was trying to sort out.

kagumi had giggled a bit when she felt his face grow hot, maybe he wasnt used to this, to tell the truth she wasnt either, but she was moe grateful to him than anyone could ever believe, so it didn feel as akward to her as she had expected. she tried to be a bit social, but that didnt work very well, she was usually a lot more shut off than she was now, but maybe that could all change for the better for her.
he had brought his voice down to normal level, something she was calmer with than what she saw in the alley. " It is allright mikami, really. they said i was fine, just a bit bruised thats all, i have had worse really. and yes, i was frightened, but then again i scare quickly when my friends are in danger, it's just unnerving thats all." people had already sacrificed for her, she didnt want him to be the next. " but i am very grateful for what you did, thank you."
he wondered know what had happened, she bit her lip, " I dont know myself really, i was trapped in the heat of the moment," she didnt know what to say," but the blood loss got to you, you were...different..." she looked up at him with big amber eyes, " frightening."

The giggling was difficult to ignore - but he managed to keep himself from getting any more flustered than he was somehow. It was reassuring to know that he had come out of the scuffle worse than she had, even if he was the one currently strapped to a hospital bed. When she thanked him, another of his tiny little smiles crept across his lips, only tugging up the corners.
"...You're welcome...but you never have to thank me. It's what my purpose is...to protect. To stop the wicked."
That smile flickered and faded away, however, when she related to Mikami the fact that he had been frightening after blood loss. His voice grew concerned, but gentle - he didn't want to be any more worrisome than he already had been. Deep brown eyes looked down into hers, calm and reassuring.
"...How so? What did I do?"
Mikami had no idea what had happened, and the more he tried to remember, the more confused he got. He had been dizzy and disoriented to begin with, so now hearing that he had gotten scary somehow was throwing him for a loop.

Her words had given him some relief, that was good.
The young girl sighed, a little relaxed now that she had gotten herself comfortable again. She could see the man from the park again, his lips were showing hints of a smile. Though it made her a bit guilty to know that he was the one who got hurt because of her, it should have been her in that hospital bed.
But she was still grateful, “ I know that, that’s what guardian angels do,” she smiled, “ they protect people.” She didn’t think any less of that statement now than when she said it to him the first time, though he might have since he was hurt. The smile was loving and warm, a little bit childish.
When their eyes finally connected again, she felt things slow down for her a bit.it wasn’t the same thing from the alley, it was nothing to be afraid of, she looked away a bit, “ the blood loss just got to you that’s all, you rambled for a short time, but then the rest of it was just cackling that’s it.” She flushed a bit embarrassed, “ but it just brought back memories, that’s all really, nothing to worry about. Youre okay now.”

When she spoke of him as a guardian angel again, Mikami felt a bit warmer. It was nice to be thought of that way, and now he felt like he had earned it with more than words - with his very flesh. His wound was numb right now, but he knew it would hurt later...still, he didn't care. What he had done mattered. It was RIGHT.
"...Cackling...and rambling...." This seemed to make him uneasy for a moment, before she mentioned it had brought back memories. As soon as that fact was on the table, his smile faded, his eyes turning apologetic. "...I'm so sorry if I scared you. I really don't remember anything that I did or said. I didn't intend or want to bring up anything unpleasant for you...."
Mikami's voice was soft and gentle, rational as always.
But there was something else on his mind.
...Maybe she deserves to know a bit more about me, for what I've learned about her. I don't want to frighten her if she's going to come to me for help....

To see that she thought nothing less of the deed he had done for her had warmed his heart and she could feel a bit better of a connection to him than anyone else. there was a mutual respect between the two of them, or more a friendship, something that she had only seen or felt when she still had Megumi. her arms wrapped more protectively around his neck and she sighed. maybe there was hope for her future yet, she hadnt had much of a friend and by what she had seen in a matter of days neither did he. he seemed moody and irritable around the other coworkers and impatient, he checked his watch alot. so now that he was strapped to the bed, she had to be his watch for now.
everytime his smile faded, it was call for a look of upmost concern. his dark brown eyes were apologetic, and she gave a half smile, " its allright, really it is, there is not much i can do anymore that brings back some sort of memory, that is why i am so shut up all of the time. It isnt your fault, and it is all in the past now, you are well." she tried to make that sound a bit brighter than she felt it. She was happy he was going to be fine
but those eyes...
she shook her head again and looked up to see him looking concerned, like something was on his mind, she tipped her lead to the side.
" something wrong?"

"All right...if you insist. If anything I do ever bothers you, though...I would encourage you to tell me." It was soft and sincere, and that tiny smile tugged at his lips again. Perhaps if his arms weren't strapped down, he would be hugging her back. Perhaps not. He was difficult to read.
But when she finally asked what was wrong, that smile teetered again. Carefully, Mikami considered his words, taking the utmost caution with what he said.
"...Nothing is wrong, per se...but...I think now would be a good time to talk to you about some things." A bit of hesitation. "...I...think of you as a friend, Kagumi. I don't have many of those these days. My life is very...shut up, as you put it, besides my faith. You've been more personal with me than I am used to - usually, if I help someone, there is a short show of thanks and I never see them again. I never thought anyone would care enough that I would wake up with them next to me in the hospital...."
His eyes twitched momentarily towards where he knew Kagumi's watch was, but he managed to stop himself very quickly, taking a deep breath that created a gentle rise and fall of his chest.
"...Those friends I do have I prefer to be honest with...and if you will be coming to me as a confidant, I think...it's only fair if I tell you a thing or two about myself. Like...what the doctors wouldn't tell you."
Mikami's cheeks went a bit red. This was embarrassing for him, and he very seldom explained to anyone what he meant to explain to her now...but it was clear that she wasn't going to leave anytime soon.
