After a small argument with his next door neighbour, the last thing Touta Matsuda wanted to do was talk. Walking down the streets of Tokyo, he searched for a place to clear his head. Traffic moved steadily past him, birds flew over head of him, and citizens packed the sidewalk. The young NPA officer pushed his way through the crowds, ignoring the pain as someone stepped on his foot in the rush. Mid day in Tokyo was always busy, and this street was obviously no exception.
After a few minutes of walking, avoiding those on bikes, and crossing the street a few times to avoid hold ups, Matsuda noticed a small café. Stopping to consider it for a moment, a teenage boy bumped into him in a rush down the sidewalk.
"Hey, watch it!" the boy snapped, moving around the black haired officer and continuing on his way. Matsuda stared after him for a quick moment, and shook his head.
~Teenagers...~ he thought, sighing. Taking a look at the café again, he decided that he needed some coffee.
Matsuda walked into the café, and the first thing he noticed was that he had unwittingly picked the best place to be at a time like this. The quaint little coffee shop was almost deserted save for a young couple sitting in the corner and the woman behind the counter. Matsuda walked to a table as far away from the couple as possible, and sat down with a drawn out sigh. Within a few moments, the waitress walked over to him.
"Hello, sir, what might I get for you today?" she asked, sounding overly friendly. Matsuda looked up at her and spoke, almost in a whisper,
"Just a coffee, black,"
The waitress squinted for a moment, and leaned in closer.
"Sorry?" she asked. Matsuda sighed once again and repeated what he wanted, a bit louder. The woman nodded and walked back to the counter, muttering something incomprehendable.
After a few moments, Matsuda's coffee was brought out to him, and he sat with his hands around the cup, breathing in the steam. Trying hard to ignore the couple, who were talking quite loudly about their love for one another, he allowed himself to fall into a daze as he attempted to clear his head of the pain brought about by his surrogate sister. However, the only thing that his mind would do was repeat the situation over and over again.
Walking out of his apartment, Matsuda almost bumped into Tsukade Kasumi, his neighbour, and close friend. She gave a small smile and tossed her deep auburn hair over her shoulders. Matsuda grinned sheepishly, and glanced down.
"Matsuda, I do believe we were supposed to meet for dinner last night, no?" Kasumi asked, her voice just slightly harsher than normal. Matsuda looked up to meet her eyes, only to find them flashing with frustration.
"I waited for two hours. Where were you?" she continued, obviously annoyed. Matsuda, unable to speak, simply looked down again. He knew why he hadn't shown up, but couldn't bring himself to tell his surrogate sister the details. However, Kasumi wasn't ready to give up.
"Well?" she asked, folding her arms in front of her. Matsuda sighed, and opened his mouth to speak. He instantly regretted saying what he did.
"I had to meet someone important," he explained, feeling butterflies arise in his stomach. Kasumi's eyes flashed again, and she threw her arms down.
"So I'm not important? Thank you, Matsuda, that's very nice to hear," she snapped, turning on her heels and storming back into her appartment. Matsuda blinked, and turned the opposite way to head downstairs. It was his day off, and he wanted to relax in the park.
Once Matsuda arrived at the park, however, he foud it hard to concentrate on relaxing. His thoughts kept on turning to Kasumi. So he got up and left the park to wander the streets instead, hoping to forget.
Still in a daze, Matsuda gave another involuntary sigh. This was turning out to be a rotten day off.
